The weather is better than forecast, and the polls are busy in Northern Monroe County. In addition to my polling place, I drove by a couple of others, and saw full parking lots between 9-10 a.m.
As usual, I was impressed by the efficiency of the voting operation. New York State elections should be a model for the rest of the country. Our mechanical voting machines are far more reliable, and less prone to fraud, than the touchscreen machines. We should use them for many elections to come, until all of the real and potential problems in touchscreen or optical scan voting have been addressed.

I agree that the elections here run great in general. I think the polling places should be more clearly marked, though. My voting place (85 Hillside) had no signs that were visible from the outside.
I heard a radio report this afternoon that said turnout was light this morning in Upstate. Has anyone heard anything different?
Countryboy,
Heard the turnout in Monroe County is very heavy.
It appears heavy here in Cattaraugus County. Allegany, just out side Olean, is over 50% turnout already. Very very high there.
About problems at the polls.
Just over the Pennsylvania border down in Bradford, Pa. they are using the new electronic voting machines for the first time. All kinds of problems there. Older people are confused by the new machines. There are lines waiting to get into the polling places. Heard a quote from down there - This is very loudly from older voter to election official who is helping "I don't want him, I want Casey!". Bradford, Pa is a very Republican small city just over the Pa line from Olean, NY.
Just a hint of what we have to look forward to.
The Walsh Watch is reporting heavy turnout in NY-25 as well. I haven't heard anything about east or south.
I appreciate the comment on NY State elections as a national model. I'd like to think that the state is last in implementing the Help America Vote law because it is being cautious. But a visit to the Steuben County Office of Elections last year revealed that the board was interested in ease of use first, and security of the new electronic systems was treated as a given. If you haven't seen the HBO special, "Hacking Democracy," I recommend that you Google it and view it online. As things are going now, I can't see a reason to vote next time, after the mechanical machines are replaced.
I watched "Hacking Democracy", and my response is that we need to make sure those lever machines are well-oiled.
