The Associated Press has a good round-up of reaction to Governor Spitzer's move to issue licenses to illegal immigrants. Randy Kuhl has made this an issue, and Eric Massa also opposes it. According to the AP, they have a lot of company.
The license issue is a big load of garbage, beginning to end. Licenses are not legal proof of identity in the first place, passports are.
I suppose I can understand and disagree with the idea that we shouldn't allow illegal immigrants driver's licenses on the basis of giving them legal privilege to drive. But my philosophy has always been that laws are meant to regulate relations among people, not to stand as a means to pretend that things don't happen. Ignoring the fact that illegal immigrants drive, that people smoke pot and others just allows problems to metastasize in shadow.

Thanks - it is basically the new Movable Type 4 theme.
On DL - I agree. We need to face the unfortunate reality of illegal immigrants, and not make a bad thing worse by denying them drivers' licenses, which just makes our roads less safe without addressing the issue of illegal immigration.
Also, it's pretty disingenuous for Kuhl and others in Congress to use this as an issue, since Congress hasn't done anything effective to address illegal immigration for the last 20 years.
